Description
Plate No. 59 from the Folio Collection of prints from the Frycinet voyage. This archival reproduction of the original 1819 print in our collection includes inset maps of Rota, Saipan and Tinian. The intent of the map by cartographer officer DuPerry is to also show the ancient names and sites on the island described in Freycinets book, Account of the L 'Uranie. The map is amazingly accurate. One can spend hours pouring over the details and place names of Guam 200 years ago. (NOTE: Since this is high resolution reproduction of the original antique print from 1819, there are some small natural areas of coloration in the print, which are typical of a 200 year old print.)

Very interesting. I didn't realize they were already mapping in such detail that early, and with such accuracy.
Thomas Walsh replied:
Yes it is amazing what was done from these quite small sailboats. The cartography was done by DuPerry, who later captioned his own Pacific voyages and produced spectacular maps of the region.
