Artist's Description

Batiment Leger Des Isles Des Larron - Guam Flying Proa
This French Print is Ex Commodore Anson(1750) and is a detailed plan of the Guam Flying Proa. Described by Europeans as the fastest boat they have ever seen. The first European reference to the proa may have occurred when Ferdinand Magellan fortuitously came upon Guam in March 1521. Francisco Alvo’s logbook from the voyage notes that:
…many small sails approached the ship sailing so swiftly they appeared to be flying. -Guampedia

Batiment Leger is translated to light boat.

Since this is high resolution reproduction of the original antique print there are some small natural areas of coloration in the print, which are typical of a 300 year old print.) Since this print was originally bound & folded, these creases show as well and are part of the the charm of the antique original.
